Hey Poopy Pants:

I was on the bus today and a woman got on. She was a very big woman, definitely overweight for her 5’6 frame (probably just over 200lbs)—you’ll see why this is relevant if you read on…

As soon as she passed her Metrocard through the reader for the bus driver she tried to make her way down the aisle. There was one or two people standing so it wasn’t very crowded. The first person she encountered that was blocking her way a teensy bit, she didn’t even ask him to move—she GLARED with such a nasty look at this person. And not even at them in the eyes, just in their general upper body/shoulder/arm area. Didn’t say “excuse me, may I pass by you” “sorry, I can’t quite squeeze by” or even just “excuse me”. She just got super angry this person was there and she couldn’t get by and then proceeded to slam and crash and bang her way by the poor guy. Didn’t even say a word. Then 10 seconds later she got to the stairs at the back of the bus where I was sitting (thankfully by the window). Beside me in the aisle seat was a young guy with a guitar in a case that was ever so slightly poking into the aisle by, oh, a couple inches. Well of course this also upset Ms. Poopy Pants and she did the same glare/thrash by/knock into the poor guy beside me in order to get by and sit across the aisle from him and make sighing noises and ‘tsk tsk’ sounds and throw negative energy at him, his guitar and all around the space in our over-air conditioned bus. Then what really amazes me is that she turned out to be one of those people who sits in the aisle seat even when the window seat is open, so that the chances of someone trying to get by her to sit in said open window seat beside her are slim to none. A: because she’s so big it would be difficult to squeeze in there (she took up more than just her own seat) & B: who wants to try and sit by someone who is obviously so miserable that they are an aisle-sitter and they will probably give you attitude if you try and get by them. She probably wouldn’t let you anyway! How in the world, in her mind does she justify getting so pissed off at these people because SHE can’t fit by healthy weight people to get down the aisle because of her own size, then she takes up almost TWO seats! It ain’t our fault, poopy pants!

Why I tell you this story is because it’s unfortunate when I see people automatically take the negative route first before anything…and unnecessary. Why not give people the benefit of the doubt? Try saying excuse me and see what happens first and if the douchebag ignores you and doesn’t move…sure, then get pissy. You will be much happier in life if you try it this way first.

Life isn’t what happens to you, it’s how you deal with what happens to you. Nothing has any meaning except for the meaning YOU give it. Perspective is a phenomenal thing and our ability to change our own perspective in a split second when we so choose…even more extraordinary. I recommend using it to your advantage. By doing this myself, it has gotten me very far with my goals and happiness in life. We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same. I am forever in debt to Tony Robbins for this.

Time to look inside, sugar. Why are you really that angry? And is there a better method with dealing with it and altering your feelings for the better? You know…only if you want, of course. It’s tough, but to quote Hamilton Holt, “Nothing worthwhile comes easily.”Image courtesy of Dead Money Softball
