Mass grave; Wounded Knee, South Dakota; December 29, 1890
Devotees of the Ghost Dance religion (created by Wovoka; Paiute) sought protection from military apprehension by moving to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Members attempted to escape arrest near the Badlands. However, at Wounded Knee Creek (Lakota: Cankpe Opi Wakpala), they were massacred by the American military. As the massacre ended, 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux had been killed and 51 wounded (4 men, 47 women and children, some of whom died later); some estimates placed the number of dead at 300.
